I've been reading a lot lately...

Weird right? I've never been much of a reader. It probably has something to do with the fact that I have to wear glasses when I read, but I have to get over that to pick some books for my 5th graders! My plan is to integrate my read aloud books with Social Studies. Fifth Grade Social Studies is U.S. History! {which I am SO excited about}

So far I've read Fever of 1793
I really liked it. Probably a little too hard for 5th graders, but Laurie Hulse Anderson is a GREAT author.

Then I read Sign of the Beaver.
I had A TON of teachers recommend this book to me, that they ALWAYS read it to their 5th graders. I was not so impressed.

Then I read The True Confessions of Charlotte Doyle. LOVED IT!
I will probably read this one to my class, just because I liked it so much!

The last book I have finished was Number the Stars
I thought it was a really cute book about WW2, but WW2 isn't that cute so I'm not sure how I feel about it.

I am currently reading:

If anyone has any other suggestions for historical fiction books about U.S. history, I'd love some suggestions!

In other news did you know you have to be a full time student to receive financial aid? Ya neither did I. I thought I would be taking 1 class during the spring, now I'm taking 3. The one I have to take ECE 323 aka Integrated Curriculum, which is really lame btw because it is geared towards k-2 grade and I am teaching 5th graders next year. The next class is the living prophets, and I am currently trying to decide between genealogy and stress management. I need to decide by TODAY. Has anyone taken either to help me decide?

  1. I read Island of the Blue Dolphins growing up (probably around 5th grade) and I remember loving it. My mom bought it for me a book fair because I ended up liking it so much.

  2. Island of the Blue Dolphins is a good one. If you end up doing another unit read "Summer of the Monkeys", my 6th graders LOVED it, and it'd be easy enough for a 5th grade class to read as well.

  4. I LOVED Out of the Dust! Also, I am loving The First Days of School. What a helpful book. Good luck on choosing your classes. Full time school in the spring is no fun. :(

  5. I just read "Daniel's Story". Really good...but I think it's a bit intense for 5th grade (another not-so-cute WW2 book.)

um side note about the author of the fever book...I wanted to read that book but I read "Speak" by her instead. bad mistake. do not read it. it's told from the perspective of an angsty teenager who gets raped and it's so depressing.

I might read the fever book though, just cause you told me :D

  6. Take stress management! It's been my 6th teaching student teaching (not even interning) and I bawled most of the day. The stress is rough.

  7. I rated genealogy because I was trying to be full time also, everyone said the teacher is awful and instead of getting you interested in genealogy, it makes you not want to do it...

Also, I read island of the blue dolphins in 5th grade. I liked it, I actually asked my mom to buy me a copy!

  8. omg! I totally forgot about some of those books-- I have totally read them!
I would just suggest choosing books that are well-known or should be read... ya know, the ones everyone has read and have changed our lives. I just don't think I would have ever ended up reading some of them on my own (like Anne Frank). I'm sure you're already planning on do that, but ya know... adding 2 cents! Good Luck!
